History of Vacuum Pump

History of Vacuum Pump

Vacuum pump affects so many areas of our life. Various pumps had been used for years for water and gas. The predecessor of this pump was "suction pump" invented by Romans in 1206. This suction it was redesigned in Europe during 15th Century. There was no significant improvement in it during two centuries after that. Later on in 17th century water pump is restructured to generate ample amount of vacuum. Still there was certain limitation of vacuum pump that it could not pull the water above certain height. There after a series of experiment carried out by different scientists to explain the vacuum pump mechanism. Galileo, Berti's, Torricelli's have performed research experiments on suction pump mechanisms building mercury barometer and they even succeeded upto certain level but could not explain the principal behind the full vacuum creation. Finally, Blaise Pascle proved and established the process of vacuum creation.

Otto von Guericke was the first to establish open experiment with his famous Magdeburg hemispheres in which the vacuum is created between the two hemispheres and pulled up putting the horse power at two different directions to separate out the hemispheres but they are not separated. On releasing the vacuum between the hemispheres separated them. This has proven the power of vacuum and also defined the process of generating complete vacuum for the first time. Robert Boyle and Robert Hook were the scientists who have studied the properties of vacuum and invented the air vacuum pump. After that there was no significant research on pump for quite a long till 1855 when Heinrich Geissler further proceed the research work on creating high level of vacuum till 10 Pa through mercury displacement pump along with electro-mechanical effects of vacuum pump. Thus evaluations of it led the scientists to design the first vacuum tube.

Industrial Applications:
The further progress and research in powerful vacuum creation process invented various types of vacuum pump for different commercial and industrial usages. Today there are different pumps with complex mechanism to achieve the targeted vacuums in the system for industrial needs. Liquid ring for paper-mills and sugar factories. Single cone is specifically designed for power plants. Close couple are widely used in consumer and FMCG industries. Two stage water ring for pharmaceutical machineries and chemical manufacturing machineries. Construction and fertilizers with Suez plants use twin lobe roots blower and chemical process pump.
